Aug. 26 (Mon)

All Participants Depart today. Here is our travel schedule:
Depart Komatsu KMQ on Japan Airlines #1286 at 11:45 AM
Arrive Tokyo/Haneda HND at 12:55 PM
Depart Tokyo/Narita NRT on Japan Airlines #62 at 5:25 PM
Arrive Los Angeles LAX at 11:35 AM on August 26th

Our last day at the WCBF, we woke up early, we ate breakfast and we loaded our bags on the bus which was surrounded by people eager to say their last goodbyes.

On the bus, it was quite emotional, this was a picture taken after the kids calmed down a bit, but 10 minutes before this, they were all in tears to leave behind all of their new friends that they had just met.

Saying farewell to the gorgeous views of Fukui.

We stopped off to get some snacks and 10 minutes after this the kids were on a super sugar high resulting in them going absolutely crazy on the bus. I was a little overwhelmed but glad because they were no longer in tears and happy again.

I love lemon flavored candies so I thought I'd try the Lemon Jelly Vitamins they had in Japan, it was a weird jelly texture but tasted good.

We said goodbye to Coach Robin at the Haneda airport, Ethan was a good sport and held the flag with her.

Watch out anyone, anywhere, USA is coming back to town!

The kids decided to eat at McDonald's in the Tokyo Airport, I decided to try some authentic ramen while I had the chance. Kayla and Emma, tried some after they finished their burgers and instantly wished they had ventured out more as I had suggested to them previously.

Another nice way to wear a neck pillow.

Last Baseball Clinic Day 6 and Shopping, Sunday, August 25th

Aug. 25 (Sun)

Here was the planned schedule:
9:0012:00 Baseball Clinic, Day 6 (Multipurpose Field & Athletic Field)
9:0012:00 Exchange Game #6 (Tsuruga city General Athletic Stadium – Baseball Field)
13:0013:20 Tree Planting Ceremony (Tsuruga city General Athletic Stadium – Baseball Field)
13:3014:30 Closing Ceremony (Tsuruga city General Athletic Stadium – Baseball Field)

But unfortunately it was raining quite hard when we woke up and the fields were too wet to play on. So we went inside the gymnasium and we played 2 games inside there until noon when we had lunch.

4 teams watched 4 teams play and then they switched every 45 minutes. Here is coach Edgar Perez throwing pitches to a team.

We started off watching and had a loud presence of course from the stands.

Here is Ryan fielding when it was our team's time to play.

 And Mary batting...

And Ethan batting...

Ryan batting....

And Kayla Catching.

At the end of the games the coaches signed some hats and traded items with the children.

Ryan was interviewed many times during the baseball fair, Maki did a great job of translating.

Here is one of the Japanese girls, Kasumi, that we made friends with at the fair.

The coaches and Akiko missed our performance the night before, so we gave them a private showing right after lunch, and they loved it! Here we are taking a picture with them right after.

After the games ended we had the closing ceremony, where the USA took home awards for Effort and I also received an award as a Chaperone. Akiko told me this was the first time that the USA had received both the team and the chaperone awards!

The end of the ceremony was great, we walked out of the gym through a tunnel of Japanese staff members clapping, cheering, high fiving, and even crying for us. It was quite a feeling to see them so appreciative of all of the countries for participating.

Here I am with the other chaperone awardees, Canadian Chaperone (Brian) and the Australian Chaperone (Erin).

At the end of the ceremony after we walked out of the gym, we went back to our lunch area and took some photos with the new friends we made to remember them.

Here we are with the Germans and a Japanese team. We played with them each day as group #7.

Here is Mary with the Australians Jamie, Ella, Stephanie, and Hollie (From left to right).

After the ceremony and picture taking, we had time scheduled to go to a local store and purchase some items from the equivalent of a dollar store in the US.

I took some pictures of the landscape because it was so beautiful. Green everywhere from the trees that covered the mountainous landscape and rice paddies that were planted along the way. The sky was starting to clear up and was making for a nicer day.

Here was our stopping place to walk to the dollar store, I believe it was a temple of some sort but I wasn't able to get too much information about it. Not a bad shot Ryan.

Here is Kayla at a manual fountain with the Cameroon team.

Here is Ethan inside the store, he found a nice air soft gun to bring back.

When we got back to the Center, we ate dinner and began packing since we had much to do and needed to get to bed. Our bus was scheduled to leave at 7:30am and we had breakfast starting at 6am. The Germans and the Netherlands were not as fortunate and were leaving the Center at 3am on a bus. They came into our room to say goodbye to their new American friends and shed some tears to show us how much we meant to them.

It was quite a scene to see, since as an adult I rarely see such strong bonds generated between adults however these children who didn't even speak the same language and only spent a few days with complete strangers, were able to open up their friendship to the fullest extent. I was very proud of all of the US kids for being so friendly and not being afraid to show their emotions.

Here is our big schedule for today:

9:0012:00 Baseball Clinic, Day 5 (Baseball Field & Multipurpose Field)
13:3016:00 Challenge Ranking (Mini-Game Tournament) (Tsuruga city)
9:0012:30 Exchange Game #5 (Mihama General Athletic Stadium – Baseball Field)

Today was a very long but awesome day, we had a great clinic and then played some Japanese Challenge games to compete for little prizes. We also had the Goodwill party a pretty fancy Japanese hotel and of course there is where we performed our well rehearsed skit/dance performance. Then we got back to the Center and all the kids were signing autographs on their shirts and hats to remember all of their new friends by.

Baseball Clinic

Challenge Games

Goodwill Party

Here we are in the morning getting ready for our Clinic with our daily song "its a great day for baseball" lead by Coach Angel Bonilla.

We had a really cool drill that we rant today on how to make double plays that taught us how to pitch it to second and how to throw it to first quickly.

We also had an awesome drill where we learned how to steal.

Then at the end of each Clinic day, we play a game, here we are getting ready to play. Emma and Mary have their game faces on. Maki, our WCBF host staff, is helping them get amped up.

Lunch Time

Ryan is getting pretty good with chopsticks.

And so is Ethan.

Maki has some awesome art skills that makes keeping track of our drinking cups extra fun.

Challenge Games

For our Challenge Games, we were assigned a little Japanese girl named Kana to walk us around to all of our stations so that we could compete in them. She was 7 years old and very cute and friendly.

Here is our first game which challenged us to build a tower out of film bottles using as many as we could for 1 minute.

A very impressive tower from the Japanese team.

We also had some paper and pencil challenges, this one was a challenge of remembering patterns of circles and Xs quickly.

Here we are taking a large group photo at the end of the umbrella balancing challenge.

This challenge was to move as many beans from one plate to the other using two very flimsy sticks.

This challenge was called W-Jump Rope, because two people jump at the same time.

Ethan and I did pretty good at this, Mary and I did pretty poor, but Mary and Maki did good.

Here we are taking a team photo after our balance challenge, this challenge was to hold your foot with one hand and close your eyes. The longest standing wins. I was pretty good at this and the kids fell over almost immediately, but then I told them the secret and they did good.

GoodWill Party

We were ready to have fun.

So much Super H2O!!

I'm a big dessert fan, so I thought I'd get a nice photo of the cool Japanese desserts that they were serving.

They made a really nice 10 minute video of our activities so far. It was a lot of fun for the kids to watch themselves and others having fun doing things they just did.

We shared a table with Germany and Japan.

After our performance we were asked to take tons of pictures with a bunch of people, it was fun but we were ready to go.

I have a video of our performance, but its pretty big as a file and will take forever to upload from here, I'll try to post it when I have more time. Until tomorrow, goodnight.
